UNFOLDING

The David Bloch Gallery is proud to present Unfolding, a group show by six members of the international art collective Agents of Change, renowned for creating environmental work on a monumental scale. As well as collaborating as a collective, each artist has pursued art careers in their own right, showing to audiences throughout the world.

Each of the participating artists share a common language that originated from the graffiti art explosion in the late 70ʼs and early 80ʼs. In the following decades their work has progressed and diversified to create its own distinct and refined voice. A deep-rooted understanding of form, material and space has allowed the artistʼs work to unfold, expanding outwards toward new contexts.

Unfolding showcases artists whose work incorporates a strong leaning toward plasticity – using a wide variety of media to produce work ranging from painting through to sculpture and installation. Through experimentation with new materials Unfolding will bring about an examination of new journeys and the opportunity to exploit future dialogues within a well established aesthetic.

Carlos Mare aka Mare 139 (USA) www.carlosmare.com

Mare is a NYC based sculptor/ painter/ scholar/ US Cultural Ambassador who in 1985 pioneered a novel version of urban graffiti as modern sculpture. Throughout his career as a sculptor, Mare has consistently brought innovation to the genreʼs aesthetic and vocabulary. His metal sculptures are inspired by his interests of form, light, space in an architectural environment. His admiration of early avant-garde art and sculpture inspired the merging of aesthetics between ʻgraffitiʼ styles and themodernists of the early 20th century.

Dermʼs work is based on a combination of abstracted typographical forms, architectural influences, and graphic and geometric shape. Taking inspiration from the colours and textures of the natural, urban and industrial environments in Scotland, he makes work in found spaces that responds to and comments on the aesthetics of its environment.

Jaybo (1968) is a runaway, setting out and wandering along in a physical as well as in a creative sense – urban subculture is the driving force behind his artistic activities. This is especially true of his paintings, which are erratic and chaotic as they directly quote various fragments of what surround him – often plumbing great psychological depths, thematically speaking, with lightness meeting existentialistic melancholy, aggressiveness meeting passion and a seemingly standard romantic streak and visionary dimension.

LX explores the pixel, the smallest unit, as a means to research the base of form, and the skeleton of colours. He works to the beat of geometry, the noise of shapes and a system of tensions in free space that response to architecture, urbanism and design. Inspired by Piet Mondrian and Vasarelly, LX One portrays the absolutes in life: Vertical and horizontal lines.

There are few artists whose recent works could be described as “painting visual haikus” without the reader needing to roll their eyes, but Remi Rough is one of them. South London born and bred, Remi has been breaking boundaries with the aid of a spray can and a paintbrush for over 27 years.

Transcending the traditional and somewhat idealised vision of a graffiti writer, he is passionate and unforgiving in his creative progression.

Steve More (UK) www.stevemore.net

Steve More uses materials from his surrounding environment to create abstract works concerned with the passing of time, decay and regeneration. In 2005, following 20 years as a graffiti artist, More switched from painting on the city surfaces to focusing on the inherent qualities of the materials that lay beneath. He works with materials such as concrete, bill posters and found objects to explore wider concepts of urban life. His work is often highly textural occupying a space between painting and sculpture.

Cosmopolite, le travail de Vincent Abadie Hafez est le résultat de métissages, aux confluences de plusieurs cultures.
Dès 1988 c’est sous le pseudonyme de Zepha qu’il s’investit au sein du mouvement graffiti. C’est en banlieue parisienne qu’il commence à imposer son nom et celui de son équipe ; il ne s’arrêtera pas depuis…
Il s’approprie l’espace public et bouscule certaines habitudes visuelles : une sur urbanisation latente est en train d’être dénoncé…

Tout comme un mot écrit sur le sable son art se veut tout d’abord éphémère et accessible à tous.
Vincent Abadie Hafez développe un univers et un langage visuels dans lesquels se croisent le travail artisanal des anciennes civilisations, le mouvement Figuration libre, l’ Abstraction lyrique et le street art. Une esthétique à la croisée de deux mondes, l’ancien et le moderne, révélant un juste équilibre du trait instinctif et de la composition réfléchie et dans laquelle l’espace cosmique entrerait en collision avec l’infiniment petit.

Les configurations hybrides révèlent divers aspects, mixant les médiums et métissant les techniques… Naissent alors des totems anthropomorphes en deux dimensions, usés par l’érosion et sur lesquels apparaissent des traces, signes et symboles calligraphiés; les déliés et les pleins qu’on y retrouve aboutissent alors moins à une écriture qu’à une construction.
Un souffle graphique composé de formes sauvages habitées d’une énergie rebelle à volonté humaine qui met
en lumière un ordre inhérent à l’équilibre de l’univers, et qui transparaît même au sein d’un chaos supposé.

Contrastes, oppositions et complémentarité enrichissent une production d’oeuvres réalisées sur de multiples supports bruts de récupération, usés par le temps, porteurs de mémoire, aboutissement d’un questionnement sur ce monde semblant oublier les principes mêmes de son existence…

« Influencé très tôt par les représentations rupestres préhistoriques, c’est plus tard, et naturellement que je prends part au développement du mouvement graffiti dès la fin des années 80. Au fil du temps, ma démarche s’est enrichie d’inspirations issues aussi bien de mouvement artistiques comme l’abstraction lyrique (art informel avec G.Mathieu, H.Hartung, J.Degottex, Jay Defeo, G.Titus-Carmel) ou la figuration libre que d’influences comme les arts Premiers, l’écriture et l’art des anciennes civilisations.

Ma production artistique est à la croisée des premières représentations écrites et d’un langage graphique « moderne », toujours basée sur une relation intime avec le support, à la recherche d’un juste équilibre entre le geste instinctif et la composition réfléchie.

Un éventail de technique et de médium allant du graffiti, au volume, en passant par la calligraphie et la gravure, me permet de mettre en exergue des questionnements comme le lien qui unit l’Humanité quant à ses origines au sein d’un mouvement commun (rapport à l’unicité / images fractales)

Actuellement par le biais d’une recherche sur la « matrice », élément fondamental pour le travail de gravure et plus particulièrement « l’eau forte » je mets en avant un travail sur la trace, l’empreinte (au sens moral / physique) qui apporte un questionnement sur l’action de l’Homme et ses répercussions.

Pour finir, l’idée d’altération, de début et de fin, qui s’appuie sur le concept ancien de cyclologie, de mouvement du temps et de cette phrase célèbre faussement attribué à Lavoisier mais initialement énoncée par Anaxagore de Clazomènes : « Rien ne se perd, rien ne se crée, tout se transforme. » qui laisse entrevoir la fragilité de la matière par rapport au temps, englobe l’ensemble de cette recherche. »

Né en 1979 à Lyon. Vit et travaille à Paris.

Depuis son premier atelier en 1997, Yassine Mekhnache, alias Yaze, attaque les toiles avec fureur, précision et économie de moyens. Il les inonde de sa personne, les recouvre de son être, n’hésitant pas à se prendre pour modèle. Entre peinture gestuelle et autoportrait, il écrit sa vie à l’encre de sa sueur.
Yaze est peintre par nécessité. Habité il pense, mange, boit et vit peinture. Cette obligation transparaît à tout moment dans ses toiles, autant dans leur gestualité que dans leur lente préparation. En perpétuelle mutation, son oeuvre ne cesse d’évoluer au grès des rencontres et des propositions de travail. Chaque exposition est l’occasion de remettre en question son travail. Volubile et impatient il se retranche derrière une ascèse volontaire pour mettre sa création en jachère. Ce chômage technique le met sous pression, lui insuffle l’énergie nécessaire pour être prêt le jour de l’exposition. En deux semaines il produira ce qu’il a mis six mois à imaginer et à ressasser. Il se nourrit de sa propre frustration. Il puise sa force de son manque de peinture. Il puise son envie de peindre dans le manque de peinture. (…)
Sa peinture est vivante, personnelle, elle raconte son histoire à travers sa chair et sa matière. Yaze ne joue pas, il est. Il ne compose pas, il propose un cheminement à part. Sa peinture est introspective, anatomique et endoscopique. Il sonde son âme, drague le fond de son être, gratte le bout de ses ongles et dissèque sur la toile toute l’opération. A coup de brosse il autopsie la peau de son tableau, la travaille, la triture. Le style est jeté, balayé par un pinceau fouettant. Les coulures sont irisées, elles saignent du nez. Toute suinte. Tout coule. Tout s’organise.
Les premiers coups donnés sont violents, libérateurs. Ils indiquent les premières lignes de force et organisent la toile. L’action est explosive mais n’est pas qu’une éruption. Elle ne se laisse pas prendre au piège de la caricature.
Conscient de ce risque Yaze maîtrise l’ensemble pour ne pas gâter ses différentes opérations picturales.
Peintre du débordement, il propose des parcours hors cadre. Il expérimente la surface de la toile mais ne renonce pas à sonder les murs, en s’aventurant du sol au plafond. Le geste se prolonge par-dessus les cimaises. L’humeur de l’artiste éclabousse l’espace en se répandant. (…)
