Vincent Abadie Hafez (1977) – “INSIDE JOB”

David Bloch Gallery Casablanca presents the solo exhibition of Vincent Abadie Hafez from December 15, 2011 to January 15, 2012 which will included new works on canvas, paper and metal.

The opening will take place thursday December 15, in the presence of the artist.

Approach:

Cosmopolitan, the work of Vincent Abadie Hafez is the result of crossbreeding of several cultures.

By 1988  under the pseudonym Zepha that he invests in the graffiti movement. It is a suburb of Paris that he began to impose his name and his team,since he will not stop…
He take place of public space and hustles certain visual habits:

Just like a word written on the sand, his art is ephemeral and accessible to all.

Vincent Abadie Hafez developed a visual language and a universe in which intersect the craftsmanship of ancient civilizations,
the movement of free Figuration, Abstraction lyrical and street art. Aesthetics at the intersection of two worlds, ancient and modern, revealing a balance of instinctive feature and reflected composition in which the cosmic space collide with the small infinitely .

the hybrid configurations reveal various aspects, mixing mediums and crossbreeding techniques … Giving Anthropomorphic totems in two dimensions, worn by erosion on which appear traces, signs and symbols calligraphic.
A breath graphic composed of wild forms inhabited of a rebellious energy, which highlights an inherent order to balance the universe, and reflected even in a supposed chaos.

Contrasts, oppositions and complementarity enrich a production of works produced in multiple formats, worn by time, memory carriers, the result of a questioning of this world seem to forget the very principles of its existence …

Statement of intent:

“Influenced earlier by the prehistoric rock performances, is later, and naturally that I take part in the development of the graffiti movement in the end of 80s. Over time, my approach has been enriched with inspiration from artistic movement as lyrical abstraction (informal art with G. Mathieu, H. Hartung, J. Degottex, Jay Defeo, G.Titus Caramel) and also of the free figuration as the influences of the premier art, writing and art of ancient civilizations.

My art is at the crossroads of the ancient written submissions and a graphical language “modern”  based on an intimate relationship with the media, seeking a balance between the instinctive and thoughtful composition.

A range of technique and medium ranging from graffiti,going through calligraphy and engraving, allows me to highlight questioning about humanity to her origins in a common movement.

Currently through a search on the “matrix”, as fundamental to the work of engraving and more particularly “strong water” I put forward work on the trace, the footprint (the moral sens / physical) who brings a questioning of human action and its consequences.

Finally, the idea of tampering her start and her end, based on the ancient concept of cyclology, movement of time and of  the famously phrase attributed but falsely to Lavoisier originally stated by Anaxagoras of Clazomenae: “Nothing is lost, nothing is created, everything changes.” Suggesting the fragility of the material with respect to time, includes all of this research. “

“Morphologie” December 1 – December 31, 2011

The artist will presents new works on paper and canvas as well as installations in-situ.

A maze is a clever roadmap. Confounded? French graffiti artist L’Atlas lives up to his name as he finds meaning even in the madness of catacombs. he is vandalising the floor and turn it into a work of art, a painted warren. The canvases are a crisscross of interlinking lines resembling a maze, with a compass giving directions. They are not chaotic; instead they exude the symmetry of the mandala and have similarities with Indian rangoli patterns.

In Paris, as L’Atlas’s works leap out of hundreds of walls and pavements, harried commuters are forced to carry home images of his catacombs. “We’re so rushed that most of us don’t ask ourselves where we are rushing to?” says L’Atlas.

As a 13-year-old, he skipped school to watch graffiti artists at work, and then stole paint to do his own thing. In his early twenties, he took off to Egypt, Morocco and Syria to learn from calligraphists. That’s where his present style emerged — a mix of Arabic geometric art and Latin alphabet.

With just about anything he can get his hands on,  French street artist L’ATLAS draws on themes of Arabic calligraphy, Greek mythology, Oriental philosophy, art and architecture as he   tags the city with his labyrinthian symbols that are at once contemporary and primitive; questioning our direction and inviting us to get lost in the urban maze. Using a spray can, paint, gaffer tape or chalk, L’Atlas creates metaphors for the city that make us go around in circles but never shut us in. “We should take the time to get lost in order to be able to find the way out. To (re)find ourselves, to get to ourselves again.”

The artist is inspired by architect Yona Friedman as an observer of daily life, of the city and what it offers us, and aims to further explore the realm of architecture by  participating in projects like the Tripoli green belt with Gilles Clément. L’Atlas has spent the last decade tagging every edifice the city could give him in an exploration of man and city, internal and external.
