Résolutions graphiques optimales
Voici un des rares jeunes artistes marocains – il est né en 1972 – chez qui la création plastique est une épreuve de force, une confrontation et un pari à remporter.
Calligraphe d’une inventivité particulière , Larbi Cherkaoui a depuis longtemps libéré la lettre arabe de son orthodoxie pour en faire un signe universel, qui relèverait de la cosmogonie, l’inscrivant dans un espace optique de type abstrait.
Lyrique, suggestif, le mouvement a fini par subvertir la normalité des formes littérales qui vont se répercuter diversement sur la peau en ondes de choc optimales, en touches et en taches spontanées, se lovant à qui mieux mieux dans un quadrillage eurythmique et à la fois emblématique : secret d’une composition/puzzle qui exige initiation préalable. L’élément contraste, notoire chez l’artiste, fait ressurgir un résultat calibré, traces cryptogrammatique dont les effets lumineux renforcent la teneur rn tons chauds et la qualité pigmentaire.
On a parfois l’impression d’assister à des résolutions graphique d’un genre nouveau, avec une tendance à la verticalité/: allusions symbolique à un lettrage durement tronqué, qui s’adresse sans doute exclusivement au regard, exception faite de toute sonorité. Ecriture émotionnelle vidée de tout esthétisme, traduite énergiquement en des formes abstraites pures.
Avec l’arrivée de larbi Cherkaoui à l emploi d’un polychromatisme qui n est pas forcément une figure de style : nuances colorées, jeu de focalisation en profondeur et gerbes lumineuses débordant sur les cotés, c’est assurément un pas en avant dans la recherche, élargissant à d’autres tons et d’autre valeurs afin de s’en approprier l’esprit et la matière générale d’un clin d’œil constant à un legs linguistique social déterminé, autant dire au patrimoine, ni le maintien plus ou moins conscient de la revendication identitaire, lesquels permettent de se situer culturellement.

Here is one of the few young Moroccan artists – he was born in 1972 – for whom the creation of visual art is a showdown, a confrontation and a bet to win.
As a very inventive calligrapher, Larbi Cherkaoui has long since cleared the Arabic letter of its orthodoxy to become a universal sign placing it as an abstract type in an optical space in the cosmogony.
Lyrical, suggestive, the movement eventually subvert the normality of literal shapes that will impact differently on the skin in optimum shock waves, in spontaneous spots and coiling in both a eurythmic and emblematic grid. It is a secret composition/puzzle which requires prior initiation.
The contrast element, notorious for the artist, brings back a calibrated result with cryptogrammatique traces. The lighting effects enhance the warm colors and quality of the pigments.
It sometimes feels like assisting in graphic resolutions of a new genre with a tendency to verticality /: symbolic allusions to severely truncated lettering, which probably is intended exclusively for the eye, except for the sound. The emotional writing is void of any aestheticism, translated energetically in pure abstract forms.
With the arrival of the work of Larbi Cherkaoui – a polychromatism which is not necessarily a style: colored shades, a game of indepth focus and light showers spilling over the sides – it is certainly a step forward in the research, extending it to other colors and other values in order to appropriate the spirit and substance, but constantly refering to the socially defined linguistic legacy, provided that heritage, or the retention of the identity claim can be located culturally.
